Chapter 7 - THE FIRST WAVE

The moment Claire stepped out of the locker room tunnel and into the blinding light of the main gym floor, the crowd erupted into a deafening roar.

Four hundred spectators cheered, yelled, and stomped their feet against the wooden bleachers, the sound reverberating off the steel ceiling like thunder. The Navy contingent chanted her name, while the Marine side roared their support for Recon.

Claire walked with measured, unhurried steps. She didn't look at the crowd; she didn't look at the lights. Her focus was entirely locked onto the black mat ahead.

Bennett watched her approach, his eyes dropping to the faded black belt wrapped around her waist. His eyebrows knit together briefly in confusion, but his arrogant smile returned as he motioned to his first fighter.

The first Marine stepped forward onto the mat.

Sergeant Miller. 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, a former collegiate wrestler with a reputation for explosive double-leg takedowns. He bounced on his feet, his massive neck muscles bulging as he loosened his shoulders.

Claire stepped onto the opposite edge of the mat, her bare feet gripping the rubber surface. She settled into a low, fluid stance—her knees bent, her center of gravity dropping, her wrapped hands raised in a tight defensive guard.

The referee—a neutral Special Forces master sergeant—stepped between them.

"Match one! Six-man rotation! No strikes to the face, submission or tap-out only! Fight!"

Miller exploded forward instantly.

He didn't waste time with feelers or distance management. Utilizing his wrestling background, Miller shot low, driving his head into Claire’s chest while reaching his long arms around her thighs to lift her off her feet and slam her onto the mat.

It was a classic, high-amplitude double-leg takedown designed to crush her spirit in the first ten seconds.

But Claire was expecting it.

As Miller drove into her space, Claire didn't fight his forward momentum head-on. Instead, she executed a perfect, lightning-fast sprawl. She threw her legs straight back behind her, driving her hips down hard onto Miller’s shoulder, forcing his head down into the mat under her full body weight.

Miller grunted, his knees digging into the canvas as he attempted to drive through her sprawl.

Before he could adjust his angle, Claire spun around his back like water flowing around a boulder. She inserted her left hook under his armpit, isolated his left wrist, and applied an immediate, vicious shoulder lock—a Kimura trap from the top position.

Miller let out a sharp cry of pain as his arm was pinned behind his back at an unnatural angle. He tried to roll, but Claire’s weight distribution was flawless, pinning his chest to the floor.

"Tap or break, Sergeant!" the referee warned.

Miller slammed his right palm against the mat twice.

Tap. Tap.

"Winner by submission: Mitchell! Time: twenty-two seconds!"

The Navy bleachers went wild.

Miller stood up slowly, clutching his sore shoulder, looking bewildered as he walked off the mat.

Claire didn't celebrate. She didn't even reset her belt. She simply turned to face the line of Marines, her breathing smooth and steady, ready for the second wave.
