Chapter 8 - THE GRIND

The second Marine stepped up immediately.
Corporal Davis—6-foot-3, 210 pounds, a heavy judo practitioner known for brutal sweeps and physical intimidation.
Unlike Miller, Davis approached cautiously. He used his superior reach to frame against Claire’s shoulders, trying to wear her down with heavy hand-fighting and physical weight.
For three agonizing minutes, the match became a grinding battle of position. Davis shoved, pulled, and attempted two heavy hip throws, trying to drain Claire’s cardiovascular reserves.
Claire remained patient. She absorbed the heavy pressure, using subtle footwork and hip movement to dissipate his strength without wasting her own energy.
As Davis grew frustrated and overcommitted on a heavy outer-leg sweep, Claire dropped her weight instantly. She slid beneath his center of mass, grabbed his lead ankle, and executed a precise, low-line heel hook.
Davis let out a sudden shout of fear as his knee joint was isolated. He tapped instantly before any real damage could occur.
"Winner by submission: Mitchell! Match two!"
The gym roared louder, but Claire could feel the first signs of physical fatigue creeping into her muscles. Her forearms were tight, and her heart rate was rising.
Without a second of rest, the third Marine stepped onto the mat.
It was Sergeant Vance—a broad, aggressive 185-pound fighter with a background in catch wrestling. Vance didn't try to technique her; he went straight for an intense, suffocating top-pressure game, throwing his weight onto her chest the moment they touched.
For four long minutes, Vance dragged Claire into deep water. They rolled across the mat in a chaotic scramble of limbs and heavy impacts. Vance locked Claire in a heavy head-and-arm position, driving his elbow into her ribs, trying to make her quit under sheer discomfort.
The crowd was on their feet, screaming encouragement.
Claire’s face was slick with sweat; her olive shirt was soaked. Her lungs burned as she fought for oxygen under Vance’s 185-pound frame.
Find the space, her father’s voice seemed to echo in her mind. Pressure is just energy. Redirect it.
Claire waited for Vance to adjust his weight to attempt a mount transition. The instant his hips lifted by two inches, Claire bridged violently, creating a tiny pocket of space. She slid her knee inside his guard, slipped her arm beneath his neck, and locked in a lightning-fast triangle choke using her powerful legs.
Vance thrashed, lifting her slightly off the mat, but Claire locked her ankles tight, squeezing with absolute determination.
Ten seconds later, Vance’s eyes rolled back, and he tapped out weakly on her thigh.
"Winner by submission: Mitchell! Match three!"

Claire released him and sat up, her chest heaving as she sucked in the humid gym air.
Three down. Three to go. And her body was beginning to feel the crushing weight of the grind.
