Chapter 10 - THE STANDARDS OF A SEAL

The gym fell into a strange, tense quiet, despite the hundreds of people standing on the bleachers.
Bennett stood at the edge of the mat. His confident, arrogant smile was completely gone. In its place was a look of cold, stunned disbelief. He looked at his five squad members—all five of them sitting on the sidelines, bruised, exhausted, and defeated.
Then he looked at Claire.
She was exhausted, her hair damp with sweat, her combat pants scuffed and dirty, her chest rising and falling in deep, ragged gasps. Yet her posture was upright. Her feet were set firm on the black mat. Her gray eyes locked onto his with an intensity that burned right through him.
"Match six!" the referee called out, his voice trembling slightly with excitement. "Final bout!"
Bennett slowly stepped onto the mat.
He was fresh, completely rested, and weighed nearly one hundred pounds more than the exhausted woman standing before him.
Bennett settled into a heavy, aggressive stance. He knew he didn't need technical perfection—he just needed to crush her remaining physical energy.
"Last chance to quit, Mitchell," Bennett said, his voice quiet, though the arrogance was now tainted with desperation. "You can barely stand."
Claire didn't answer. She simply raised her wrapped hands into her defensive guard, her bare feet adjusting on the canvas.
"Fight!"
Bennett charged.
He drove forward like a freight train, extending his heavy hands to grab her head and throw her to the mat.
Claire didn't try to sprawl—she lacked the physical strength to hold off his initial charge after five brutal matches.
Instead, as Bennett reached for her, Claire dropped to her back intentionally, pulling him into her full guard—a high-level defensive maneuver.
Bennett landed heavily on top of her, driving his elbows into her sides, trying to break her guard through sheer pain and weight.
"Give up!" Bennett snarled, his face inches from hers. "Give it up!"
Claire absorbed the pressure. She locked her legs around his waist, controlling his posture, refusing to allow him to rain down strikes or pass her guard.
Bennett pressed his forearm across her throat, cutting off her air supply.
Claire’s vision began to dim around the edges. Darkness encroached on her mind. Her body was completely empty of energy.
You don't surrender the Trident, she thought. You never surrender.
With a sudden, explosive surge of adrenaline born from pure, unyielding will, Claire unlocked her legs, threw her right leg over Bennett’s left shoulder, and executed a flawless, inverted armbar submission from the bottom position.
She trapped Bennett’s right arm against her chest, hips rising violently into his elbow joint.
Bennett’s joint popped loudly.
"AAAGH!" Bennett screamed in agony as hyper-extension threatened to shatter his elbow.
He didn't want to tap. His pride, his squad, his entire reputation hung in the balance.
Claire applied more pressure, her hips driving higher, her eyes fixed on his with terrifying resolve.
Bennett couldn't take the pain.
Tap! Tap! Tap! Tap!
Bennett slammed his free hand against the mat in a frantic, desperate surrender.
"WINNER BY SUBMISSION: LIEUTENANT MITCHELL!" the referee screamed, raising his hand into the air.
The entire gym exploded.
Four hundred spectators vaulted off the bleachers, screaming, cheering, and pounding on the walls. Navy personnel poured onto the floor, surrounding the mat in a sea of wild, unrestrained celebration.
Bennett rolled off her, clutching his injured arm, his face buried in the mat in total, catastrophic humiliation.
Claire lay on the mat for a brief moment, looking up at the high ceiling of the gym, taking in her first deep breath of victory.
Master Chief Turner stepped onto the mat, a wide, proud smile breaking across his weathered face. He extended a heavy hand down to her.
Claire took it, and Turner pulled her smoothly to her feet.
She stood at the center of the mat, her hand held high in victory. She looked down at the frayed black belt wrapped tightly around her waist, then looked across the mat at Bennett, who was being helped to his feet by his defeated squad.
Bennett looked up at her, his eyes filled with a mixture of pain, defeat, and a new, absolute respect. He knew what awaited him on Monday morning—a public apology to every woman on the base.
Claire didn't gloat. She didn't shout. She simply bowed her head slightly to Bennett and his squad—a warrior acknowledging her opponents—before turning to walk off the mat alongside Master Chief Turner.
As she walked toward the locker room tunnel through a wall of cheering sailors and Marines, Claire reached down and touched the golden trident pinned to her heart inside her mind.

She hadn't just defended her Trident.
She had proven, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that the standards had never been lowered.
