Chapter 2 - THE CHALLENGE ISSUED

Three days later, the humid heat of Coronado was replaced by the oppressive, sweat-soaked atmosphere of the base’s main combatives gym.

It was a vast, high-ceilinged structure built of corrugated steel and exposed iron trusses. Rows of harsh overhead industrial halogen lights glared down, casting a bright, yellow light over the center of the floor, where massive black wrestling mats were laid out end-to-end. Around the floor, tiered wooden bleachers rose toward the rafters, already half-filled with off-duty personnel, instructors, and trainees from various commands across the base.

The smell of sweat, athletic tape, ozone from the heating units, and rubber matting filled the air. The sound was a dull roar of shouted instructions, boots slapping against canvas, and heavy bodies hitting the mat during routine grapple drills.

In the center ring, a series of light sparring sessions were wrapping up under the supervision of senior instructors. Claire stood at the edge of the matting, clad in her olive training gear, her feet bare, wrapping her knuckles with black cotton hand-wraps. Her movements were methodical, precise, and automatic.

From the far corner of the gym, Staff Sergeant Bennett stepped out from behind a row of weight racks. He was flanked by his full six-man squad, all wearing their military training shorts and olive tops. The Marines moved with the swagger of men who owned the floor.

Bennett caught the eye of the lead combatives instructor, a Navy Chief who was wrapping up a session on guard passes.

"Hey, Chief!" Bennett called out, his voice booming over the ambient noise of the gym. He raised his hand, pointing a thick index finger directly across the mat at Claire. "We’ve been doing technical drills all afternoon. How about we put on a real show for the boys?"

The gym’s noise level dipped slightly as nearby sailors and Marines turned to look.

Bennett walked toward the edge of the black mat, his squad filing in behind him like a vanguard. He stopped ten feet from Claire, his eyes locking onto her compact frame with blatant amusement.

"I volunteer Lieutenant Mitchell," Bennett announced loudly, making sure his voice reached the bleachers where dozens of spectating Marines were seated.

He reached back and clapped a heavy hand onto the shoulder of Corporal Garcia, shoving the 170-pound Marine forward onto the mat. Garcia stumbled slightly before catching his footing, settling into a broad, athletic stance. Garcia was a third-degree Taekwondo black belt and a seasoned military combatives practitioner, known throughout his battalion for explosive striking and quick footwork.

"Full contact," Bennett added, a dark, competitive grin spreading across his face. "Don't hold back, Garcia. Show the Lieutenant what real Marine Recon combat looks like."

A low murmur rippled through the surrounding spectators. Full-contact combatives without headgear or gloves was typically reserved for advanced instructional demonstrations, not casual afternoon Sparring.

Claire finished wrapping her left wrist, tucked the tail of the cloth securely under the wrap, and stepped onto the black mat.

She didn't speak. She didn't look at Bennett. Her bare soles made no sound against the rubberized surface as she walked to the center of the square.

Garcia stepped up to face her. He was nearly five inches taller and forty-five pounds heavier, his shoulders thick with dense muscle. He bounced lightly on the balls of his feet, adjusting his stance, his eyes fixed on her head, looking for an easy angle of attack.

"Ready, Lieutenant?" Garcia asked, his tone polite but infused with absolute confidence.

Claire nodded once, her eyes settling into a cold, motionless stare. "Whenever you are, Corporal."
