Chapter 6 - THE DYING WHISPER AND THE RINGING PHONE

The portable heart monitor beside Clara beeped weakly, a slow, unsteady rhythm that filled the small bedroom.
"We have a faint pulse," the lead paramedic announced, securing Clara to a lightweight folding stretcher. "Severe malnutrition, acute dehydration, and advanced physical exhaustion. We need to move her to the ICU immediately!"
As the two paramedics lifted the stretcher from the floor, Clara’s eyelids fluttered open. Her dark eyes, unfocused and glazed with fever, scanned the dim room until they landed on Adrian’s face.
A tiny, breathless gasp escaped her lips from beneath the clear plastic oxygen mask.
She reached out a weak, pale hand, her fingers trembling in the air. Adrian instantly stepped forward, dropping to one knee beside the moving stretcher, grabbing her cold hand in his own broad, warm palm. He pressed her knuckles against his cheek, his dark eyes glossy with uncharacteristic, raw emotion.
"Clara..." Adrian choked out, his voice cracking. "I'm here. I'm sorry... I'm so sorry. I didn't know."
Clara’s fingers tightened weakly around his wrist, using the absolute last reserve of her strength to pull his ear down toward her face. She pushed the oxygen mask slightly aside with her shoulder, her voice a dry, ragged whisper that barely carried over the hum of the equipment.
"Your mother..." Clara gasped, her chest heaving as she fought for air.
Adrian leaned closer, his forehead touching her damp hair. "What about her? What did she do?"
Clara’s dark eyes locked onto his with a sudden, terrifying clarity.
"She knows why your father died," Clara whispered. "It wasn't an accident... it was..."
Before she could finish the sentence, Clara’s hand went limp, dropping onto the white canvas sheet of the stretcher as her eyes rolled back. The heart monitor accelerated into a sharp, warning beep as the paramedics rushed her out the bedroom door and down the narrow hallway toward the stairwell.
In that exact, silent second, the heavy luxury smartphone in Adrian’s right hand began to vibrate violently.
BRRRR... BRRRR... BRRRR.
The screen illuminated in the dim bedroom, displaying a incoming call from a high-security contact label: MOTHER.
Before Adrian could swipe the glass screen to answer, a small, cold hand slipped into his left palm. He looked down. Lucy was standing beside his knee, looking up at the glowing phone screen with wide, terrified eyes.
Lucy leaned in close and whispered softly into his ear:
"Daddy… don’t tell Grandma we found you."
Adrian stared down at his three-year-old daughter, his thumb hovering over the ringing phone screen.
"Why, Lucy?" Adrian asked softly.
Lucy squeezed her stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest, her voice trembling in the quiet apartment:

"She said if you found out about us, Mommy would disappear forever."
The phone continued to ring in the dim room as the video cut to black, leaving the billionaire standing over the ruins of his past, holding the key to a deadly family secret.
