Chapter 5 - THE RETURNED LETTERS AND THE FALSE WARNING

Adrian reached down with a trembling hand, pulling the heavy envelope from beneath the dusty frame. The paper was worn at the edges, heavy with contents that had been crammed inside over months of desperation.
Lucy tugged gently at his suit sleeve, her small face pale as she watched the paramedics attach a heart monitor lead to her mother's chest.
"Daddy?" Lucy whispered.
Adrian looked down at her, his heart hammering against his ribs. "I'm right here, sweetheart. I'm right here."
Lucy looked at the floor, her fingers twisting the fabric of her stuffed rabbit. "Grandma said you didn’t want us. She said if we came to your big building, your guards would put Mommy in prison."
Adrian froze.
A cold, icy surge of adrenaline flooded his veins. He turned his attention back to the manila envelope in his lap and ripped the top seal open.
Inside lay dozens of thick, formal letters. All of them were addressed to his personal penthouse and his private office at Walker Global Tower. Every single envelope bore the red, ink-stamped seal of the United States Postal Service: RETURN TO SENDER – REJECTED BY ADDRESSEE.
Adrian’s fingers moved rapidly, flipping through the stack of fifty or sixty letters spanning three entire years. As he turned them over, he noticed a repeated, handwritten note scrawled across the back of every single returned envelope in cold, precise, elegant red ink—a handwriting he knew better than his own.
“Subject has refused contact. Do not attempt further delivery to the Walker estate.”

It was the handwriting of his mother, Eleanor Walker.
The realization hit Adrian like a physical blow. Clara had not abandoned him. She had tried to reach him—dozens of times, while starving in this tiny Queens apartment, while raising his twin daughters alone in poverty. Every single plea for help, every letter detailing the birth of his children, had been intercepted, rejected, and sent back by the matriarch of the Walker family.
