Chapter 1 - THE INTERRUPTED ACQUISITION IN THE MANHATTAN TOWER

The morning sun over Manhattan struck the glass façade of Walker Global Tower like a blade, reflecting brilliant gold across the floor-to-ceiling windows of the sixty-fifth-floor executive boardroom. Inside, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. A twenty-foot table of hand-polished dark walnut stretched across the room, surrounded by twelve high-ranking corporate executives in tailored charcoal suits. At the head of the table sat Adrian Walker.

At thirty-eight, Adrian was the undisputed titan of New York real estate and equity acquisitions. He was tall, powerfully built, with dark wavy hair neatly styled, trimmed stubble, and an intimidating presence that made seasoned board members measure their words carefully. Ink crept up from beneath the crisp white collar of his bespoke black suit, joining subtle, dark line-work across his right hand—a quiet testament to a ruthless past that preceded his corporate empire. His wrist bore a heavy, platinum luxury timepiece that ticked with mechanical, unforgiving precision.

Before him lay a seventy-page final acquisition contract designed to dismantle and absorb a rival firm. Adrian held a sleek fountain pen above the signature line, his dark eyes scanning the room as his chief legal counsel delivered a final briefing slide.

Then, the heavy frosted-glass doors at the end of the boardroom clicked open.

A pair of corporate security officers stood in the hallway, looking frantic, but they were too late. Two small three-year-old twin girls slipped past the marble threshold, their soft shoes making tiny, light sounds against the plush wool rug.

The room fell into an immediate, heavy silence.

The girls were identical in face, but distinct in detail. Lucy walked on the left, her curly brown hair held back by a pale pink ribbon. She wore a faded, patched light-pink pastel dress and clutched a small, worn stuffed rabbit with one missing felt eye against her chest. To her right stood Abby, her curly brown hair tied with a yellow ribbon, wearing a matching patched light-yellow pastel dress. Her small face was set with a quiet, direct determination that mirrored Adrian’s own brow.

The two little girls walked straight past the frozen executives, ignoring the multi-billion-dollar skyline behind the table, and stopped directly in front of Adrian’s leather armchair.

Lucy raised her brown eyes, her small voice cutting through the silent room with startling clarity.

"Mommy says you’re our daddy."

Beside her, Abby looked up at Adrian’s face, finishing her sister's thought with grave simplicity.

"There’s no food left at home."

The entire boardroom went completely, utterly silent.
