Chapter 9 - THE EXECUTION ON THE THREE-HUNDRED-METER LANE

BANG!

The sharp, concussive crack of the heavy wooden rifle shattered the stillness of the compound, echoing off the concrete range control tower and rolling out across the dry grass berms toward the treeline.

A sharp cloud of white smoke erupted from the muzzle, instantly caught and dispersed by the fifteen-knot crosswind.

Elena Ward did not flinch under the heavy recoil. Her locked-sling technique absorbed the backward impulse entirely through her shoulder and torso, keeping the bare front iron sight post almost completely level across the target horizon.

Three hundred meters downrange, at the far edge of the target pit, a green pop-up silhouette target was struck with violent force.

CLANG!

The distinct, metallic ring of a center-mass steel hit carried back across the open field, crisp and unmistakable.

Before the spectators on the rail could process the speed of the engagement, Elena’s right hand moved with rapid, rhythmic precision.

WORK THE BOLT—EJECT—CHAMBER.

A smoking brass casing flew from the open port, arc-ing through the sunlight and clattering onto the concrete apron.

BANG!

A second later, a two-hundred-meter pop-up target on the far left edge of the range—moving rapidly along an automated track through the shifting dust—was engaged before it reached its halfway mark.

CLANG!

"Center mass," Captain Noah Bennett muttered under his breath, his eyes wide as he looked through his own high-magnification spotting scope. "She didn't even adjust for the wind shift. She held lead on bare iron."

WORK THE BOLT—EJECT—CHAMBER.

BANG!

CLANG!

WORK THE BOLT—EJECT—CHAMBER.

BANG!

CLANG!

Five shots in seven seconds. Five engagements across varying distances, under shifting crosswinds, executed without a optical scope, without a bipod, and without a single moment of hesitation. Every round struck the absolute center of the silhouette targets, the metallic impacts ringing out like a steady, mechanical rhythm across the North Carolina range.

Behind her, the spectators stood frozen in complete, stunned silence.

Ryan Cole’s face was completely drained of color. He stood with his arms hanging loosely at his sides, staring at the distant steel targets as if watching an impossible act of magic. Derek Hayes had taken two steps back, his broad frame shrinking under the absolute, undeniable display of elite marksmanship.

Elena cleared the chamber of the old rifle, catch-ing the final empty brass casing in her palm as it ejected. She rested the weapon smoothly on the shooting bench, muzzle pointed safely downrange, and turned around to face the spectators.
