Chapter 7 - THE REEVALUATION AT RANGE CONTROL

The echo of the firing line's quiet pause seemed to ripple backward into the briefing room and the administrative spaces of the compound. Though the shot had not yet been fired, the atmosphere around Lane 5 was permanently altered.
Colonel Marcus Hale stood motionless on the concrete staging pad, his fingers gripping the discarded, cracked optic so tightly his knuckles turned white beneath his weathered skin. His breathing was shallow, his sharp eyes fixed entirely on Captain Elena Ward's shoulder alignment.
Behind him, Lieutenant Ryan Cole took another step forward, his previous arrogance replaced by a rising, uneasy knot of apprehension in his stomach. He looked from Colonel Hale's pale face to Elena's motionless back, completely unable to bridge the gap between his joke and the Colonel's reaction.
"Sir?" Ryan repeated, his voice lower, lacking its former authority. "Do you need me to pull her off the line? I can get her a standard M4 from the reserve rack..."
"Shut your mouth, Lieutenant," Hale said.
The command was delivered without heat, but it carried an absolute, freezing weight that silenced Ryan instantly. Derek Hayes, standing a few feet back near the metal storage lockers, straightened his posture, his broad shoulders tensing as he recognized the shift in the Colonel's tone.
Colonel Hale walked forward slowly, his heavy combat boots making a distinct, deliberate crunching sound against the loose gravel border of the concrete firing apron. He stopped three feet behind Elena, observing every line of her posture, every micro-adjustment she made against the shifting crosswind.
He looked at the worn wooden stock—the specific pattern of scratches near the cheek rest, the darkened burnish where decades of palm sweat had discolored the walnut finish, and the faint, hand-carved notch near the rear sling swivel that had been filled with dark epoxy years ago.
Hale knew this rifle. He had seen it before, in a place far removed from the manicured ranges of North Carolina, under conditions that were never recorded in public military logs.
He looked at Elena’s profile—her jaw relaxed, her eye aligned cleanly through the rear iron aperture, completely unbothered by the wind, the spectators, or the broken optic sitting in his hand.
"Where did you get this weapon, Captain?" Hale asked quietly, his voice cutting through the ambient hum of the range.
Elena did not break her cheek weld against the stock. Her eyes remained locked downrange on the pop-up target structure.

"It was issued from Cage B, Colonel," Elena replied flatly, her voice entirely steady. "Lieutenant Cole felt it suited my skill level."
Hale slowly turned his head to look at Ryan. The glare from the senior officer was so cold, so profoundly filled with contempt, that Ryan involuntarily took a half-step backward, his mouth opening slightly but producing no sound.
