Chapter 10 - THE UNANSWERED AUTHORITY

Her posture was exactly as it had been inside the dim briefing room an hour earlier—calm, quiet, and completely devoid of pride or hostility. She looked at Ryan Cole, then at Derek Hayes, her face an unreadable mask.
"The rifle works fine, Lieutenant," Elena said softly.
Ryan opened his mouth, trying to speak, trying to salvage any remnant of his officer authority, but his voice failed him entirely. He lowered his eyes to the concrete floor, unable to meet her gaze.
Colonel Marcus Hale stepped forward, his heavy boots coming to a stop directly beside Elena's shooting bench. He laid the cracked optic down on the wooden table next to her ammunition box.
He looked down at the scarred walnut stock, then looked directly into Elena’s eyes.
"Who taught you that hand position, Captain?" Hale asked, his voice low, intense, and trembling with a deep, unvoiced emotion. "Who taught you to grip the stock at the forward sling swivel?"
Elena looked at the Colonel for a long, quiet second.
She did not answer with a name, a unit designation, or a deployment record. She simply reached down, picked up the faded leather sling, and unlooped it from her forearm with smooth, deliberate care.
"Someone who told me never to rely on glass when the wind starts turning, sir," Elena replied quietly.
Colonel Hale stared at her, his eyes searching her calm face for several seconds before he slowly lowered his head in a single, deep, profound nod of respect—a nod reserved only for those who held the highest, most unshakeable authority in the field.

Hale turned on his heel and walked away toward the Range Control Tower, leaving the entire unit standing on the firing line in absolute, heavy silence.
Captain Elena Ward picked up her old wooden-stock rifle, turned her back on the silent crowd of soldiers, and began walking calmly down the gravel pathway, her shadow stretching long and sharp across the sunlit North Carolina range.
