Chapter 8 - THE WHISPER OF THE LEGEND

Along the spectator rail, the shift in tone had fully registered among the fifteen soldiers who had followed Elena out from the briefing room. The atmosphere of a public execution had vanished, replaced by a dense, suffocating curiosity.

Captain Noah Bennett, still standing at Lane 4 with his modern tactical rifle resting on its bipod, stepped back from his shooting bench. He had spent years studying long-range ballistics and military marksmanship history, and he recognized the look on Colonel Hale’s face. It was the look of a veteran officer confronting an impossible reality.

Noah leaned toward Sergeant Derek Hayes, his voice dropping to a low whisper.

"Do you know what rifle that is, Hayes?" Noah asked.

Derek swallowed hard, looking at the scarred walnut stock. "It's an old surplus bolt-action or modified M14... leftover stock from the armory."

"That's not surplus," Noah said softly, shaking his head. "Look at the receiver modification and the forward sling mount position. That's a hand-built Task Force 11 competition receiver from the late nineties. There were only three ever built for the long-range inter-service matches before the unit deployed."

Derek frowned, his brow furrowing. "So? It's still an antique with no glass."

"The officer who shot that rifle set the unassisted iron-sight record at five hundred yards during the 2002 Joint Operations trials," Noah continued, his eyes fixed on Elena's thumb position against the wooden gouge. "He was killed in action in the Shah-i-Kot Valley three months later. Nobody has been able to hit paper with that specific barrel balance since then because the harmonics were hand-tuned to his specific holding grip."

Derek stared at Noah, then slowly turned his head to look back at Captain Elena Ward.

Elena remained frozen in her firing stance. Her left thumb rested precisely inside that old, darkened gouge—the exact hand placement required to balance the custom barrel harmonics of a weapon thought to be unusable by anyone else in the modern Army.

The silence on the range grew absolute.

Ryan Cole was sweating now, despite the cool morning wind blowing across the grass berms. He looked at his own pristine uniform, then at the cracked scope in Colonel Hale's hand, realizing with sudden, horrifying clarity that his attempt to humiliate Elena had instead placed him under a spotlight he was completely unprepared for.

Elena’s finger took up the initial slack on the heavy two-stage match trigger.
