Chapter 8 - The Account Closes
Eric eventually produced a credit card.
It was declined.
Dana used hers to cover the deposit while Leonard agreed to pay the remainder from his retirement account. The desserts were canceled. Two unopened wine bottles were removed. Several relatives quietly paid for their own meals after realizing the celebration had been built on money taken without Claire’s permission.
Nobody toasted Eric again.
Noah’s steak arrived fifteen minutes later.
He ate slowly while Claire sat beside him.
Leonard opened the handmade card before leaving. When he saw the fishing boat Noah had drawn, his eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Noah nodded because children often accept apologies before adults have earned them.
Claire did not.
The next morning, she closed the family emergency account.
She paid Patricia’s remaining verified medical bills directly to the providers, then transferred the balance into a protected savings account for Noah.
She also sent every family member a summary of the unauthorized withdrawals.
No accusations.
Just dates and amounts.
Eric called seventeen times.
Patricia left messages saying Claire was punishing everyone over a hotdog.
Claire answered only once.
“It was never about the hotdog.”
“Then what was it about?”
“You were willing to spend my money on everyone except my son.”
Silence followed.
Claire disconnected the call.
Eric sold the boat six weeks later to repay part of the fund. Leonard returned money from his retirement account and insisted on a written repayment plan. Patricia apologized repeatedly but continued describing herself as someone caught between her children.
