Chapter 10 - The Next Dinner

Leonard’s next family dinner was held at Claire’s house.
Not for a holiday.
Not for a performance.
He wanted to apologize to Noah properly and begin rebuilding what the retirement dinner exposed.
The guest list was small.
Claire.
Noah.
Leonard.
Patricia, after Claire made the rules clear.
Eric was not invited.
They ate roast chicken, potatoes, green beans, and store-bought pie. No premium wine. No private room. No one took photographs for social media.
Before sitting down, Leonard handed Noah an envelope.
Inside was money for the savings account Claire opened after closing the family fund.
“This is not payment for forgiveness,” Leonard said. “It’s part of what I owe your mother.”
Noah looked toward Claire.
She nodded.
He accepted it.
Patricia sat quietly for most of the meal. Near dessert, she looked at Noah.
“I should never have said your mother needed to pack food.”
Noah considered her carefully.
“You could have shared your steak.”
Patricia closed her eyes.
“Yes,” she said. “I could have.”
It was the most honest thing she had said about the dinner.
After they left, Claire cleaned the kitchen while Noah dried plates.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Are we rich?”
Claire laughed softly.
“No.”
“Uncle Eric acted rich.”
“I know.”
“Was it because he had your money?”
“Partly.”
Noah placed a plate in the cabinet.
“Then that means he wasn’t rich.”
Claire looked at him.
“No. He wasn’t.”
He smiled as if he had solved a difficult equation.
At the restaurant, Eric had believed wealth meant ordering whatever he wanted and making someone else absorb the cost.
Claire learned something different.
Wealth was being able to stand beside her son and refuse to make him smaller for anyone’s comfort.
It was owning her yes.
May you like
Owning her no.
And knowing exactly who would receive the next dollar she earned.
