Chapter 6 - The Real Total

The restaurant manager entered ten minutes later.

He carried a tablet angled so no guest could read the details.

“Ms. Bennett,” he said, “we removed your card from the reservation. There is an outstanding authorization that will need another form of payment before service continues.”

Eric’s jaw tightened.

“How much?”

The manager spoke quietly.

“With the private room, food, wine, gratuity, and scheduled desserts, the current total is just over fourteen thousand dollars.”

Someone at the far end of the table coughed.

Dana stared at Eric.

“You said the dinner was seven thousand.”

Eric avoided her eyes.

Patricia turned toward Claire.

“You have enough in the account.”

“That isn’t relevant.”

“This is your father’s only retirement dinner.”

Claire nodded.

“And Noah only has one childhood.”

Leonard finally spoke.

“Claire, please. Put the card back, and we’ll discuss it tomorrow.”

“That is how this account reached forty-seven thousand dollars in withdrawals.”

The room changed.

Patricia’s face went pale.

Eric looked at his mother.

Dana stopped breathing for a moment.

“What withdrawals?” Leonard asked.

Claire pulled out her phone.

“I reviewed the records last week.”

Patricia’s voice became sharp.

“You had no right to spy on us.”

“It is my account.”

Claire had noticed the balance dropping faster than medical and household expenses could explain. She downloaded the statements but had not yet confronted anyone.

The transactions included restaurant deposits, Eric’s country-club fees, Dana’s birthday trip, a down payment on a fishing boat, and several transfers into an account Claire did not recognize.

Eric had not merely used the emergency fund for dinner.

He had been living from it.
