Chapter 1 - Separate the Checks

Claire Bennett stood so suddenly that her chair scraped across the polished restaurant floor.
Every conversation in the private dining room stopped.
Beside her, eight-year-old Noah sat frozen in his beige shirt, staring at the dry hotdog on a paper plate in front of him. Across the long table, his cousins cut into thick steaks that cost more than Claire’s weekly grocery bill.
Eric leaned back in his gray suit, wearing the smug expression he always used when he believed Claire was too embarrassed to respond.
“Kids eat hotdogs,” he said. “He’ll survive.”
Noah lowered his eyes.
Claire’s mother, Patricia, lifted one hand as if Claire were the person creating discomfort.
“You should’ve packed him something.”
The waiter remained crouched beside a small spill near the table, cloth in hand, looking between the family members without knowing whether he should move.
Claire turned toward him.
“Please separate the checks.”
Eric’s smile disappeared.
The waiter straightened slowly.
“Of course, ma’am.”
Claire looked around the table.
“Everything ordered for Noah and me goes on my card. Everything else goes to the person who ordered it.”
Her father stopped pretending to read the wine list.
Eric’s wife set down her fork.
Then Claire delivered the sentence that changed the entire room.
“And remove my card from the family account.”
Noah finally looked up.

Relief replaced the shame in his face.
Across the table, three adults realized at the same moment that the expensive dinner had never actually belonged to them.
