Chapter 6 - The Other Lie

Richard did not expose Frank in front of the children.

He asked Whitney’s younger cousins to wait with Aunt Evelyn near the nurses’ station. Then he closed the hospital-room door.

Frank crossed his arms.

“You’ve made your point.”

“No,” Richard said. “You made mine.”

He opened a dark folder he had carried from the car.

Inside were copies of bank records, care invoices, and Margaret’s original estate documents.

Claire stared at them.

“What is that?”

“The reason your father stopped speaking to me.”

Frank’s face changed.

Richard explained calmly.

He had kept every receipt from Margaret’s care. The home nurse. Medical transport. Medication. Accessibility repairs. Frank contributed almost nothing, then tried to claim reimbursement from the estate using altered documents.

Diane whispered, “Not tonight.”

Richard looked at her.

“You helped him tell the family I stole from our mother.”

Claire felt the room tilt.

For nine years, she had avoided Richard because her parents called him selfish.

Now he was the only relative who came when she needed help.

Whitney looked at Frank.

“Is that true?”

Frank’s jaw tightened.

“This has nothing to do with Claire.”

“It has everything to do with her,” Richard replied. “You punish anyone who forces you to see yourself clearly.”

He pointed toward Claire’s cast without moving closer.

“Your mother needed help, and you left me to carry it.”

Then toward Noah.

May you like

“Your daughter needed help, and you left her too.”

The pattern had survived nine years because the family kept calling it something else.
