Chapter 4 - Why Richard Came
Richard lived two hours away and had not spoken to Frank since their mother’s funeral.
The family believed the argument had been about inheritance.
Frank told everyone Richard tried to take more than his share of the estate. Diane repeated the story until it became accepted fact.
The truth was different.
Their mother, Margaret, had spent her final year needing daily assistance. Richard and Evelyn cared for her, paid for home nursing, managed medications, and handled appointments.
Frank visited twice.
After Margaret died, Frank demanded an equal share of the remaining savings without accounting for the money Richard had spent on her care.
Richard did not object to sharing the estate.
He objected when Frank submitted altered receipts to make it appear he had paid expenses he had never covered.
When Richard confronted him, Frank accused him publicly of trying to steal the inheritance.
The family chose the simpler story.
Richard became greedy.
Frank became the victim.
Claire had been nineteen and believed her father.
For nine years, Richard stayed away.
Then, at 11:18 p.m., Aunt Delphine sent him a message from Whitney’s dinner.
Claire is in the hospital. Frank refused to go because of the party.
Richard called St. Anne’s immediately.
The nurse could not share medical details, but she confirmed Claire was there.
He and Evelyn left without packing.
By the time they arrived, Noah had been moved to the nursery because Claire nearly dropped him when pain shot through her ribs.
Richard learned that detail from Nurse Tessa outside the room.
That was when his anger became cold.
