Chapter 3 - The Daughter Who Needed Less

Claire had always been the daughter who needed less.
At least, that was the family version.
Whitney needed help with homework.
Whitney needed expensive dance lessons to build confidence.
Whitney needed a new car after college because long commutes made her anxious.
Claire worked part-time through nursing school and bought her first car herself.
That made her independent.
Independence became the excuse for giving her nothing.
When Claire became pregnant, the baby’s father left before Noah was born. Frank described the situation as proof that she had made poor choices. Diane offered advice but rarely practical help.
Whitney became engaged six months later.
The family treated it like a national celebration.
Frank and Diane rented a private room at a downtown restaurant. They invited cousins, aunts, old family friends, and people Whitney barely knew. Diane ordered floral arrangements. Frank paid for champagne and a photographer.
Claire had planned to attend before the accident.
She had even bought Whitney a gift.
While she lay in the hospital, Whitney stood beneath warm lights opening presents.
When Frank ended Claire’s call, he returned to the table and told everyone she was being dramatic.
“She had a minor accident,” he said.
Diane asked whether Noah was safe.
Frank answered, “She’ll figure it out.”
Someone at the table heard him.
