Chapter 1 - From Tonight On

Claire lay beneath the hospital blanket with her casted arm resting across her stomach.

Seven stitches pulled tightly above her eyebrow. Every breath reminded her of the bruising along her ribs. She had stopped crying only because exhaustion had taken over.

At the side of the bed, her father pointed at her as though she had caused the entire night.

“I begged you to help me,” Claire whispered.

Frank’s face hardened.

“It was Whitney’s night.”

Near the doorway, Diane held four-week-old Noah against her chest. The baby was safely wrapped in his blue blanket, sleeping despite the tension filling the room.

The door opened wider.

Uncle Richard stepped inside wearing a rain-damp charcoal overcoat over his suit. His silver hair was wet at the temples, and his expression carried the kind of anger that did not need volume.

He looked at Claire’s cast.

The stitches.

The medical equipment.

Then at his brother.

“Your party is over.”

Frank turned sharply.

Diane’s face went pale.

Richard crossed the room.

“You left your daughter alone after a car crash.”

Frank lowered his hand.

“You don’t know what happened.”

“I know she called from a hospital bed and asked you to hold your grandson for one night.”

Richard rested one hand on Claire’s bed rail.

Aunt Evelyn stepped in behind him and gently took Noah from Diane.

Claire’s face finally broke.

Richard looked down at her.

“From tonight on, she has family.”

For the first time since the collision, Claire believed she might actually be safe.
