Chapter 6 - Why Elena Stayed Quiet

Rachel’s face flushed.
The cameras in the crowd were no longer fun for her.
“Why didn’t you say something?” she demanded, turning on Elena. “You let this happen.”
Elena looked at her for a long moment.
“No,” she said. “You did.”
The words were quiet.
Final.
Mercer stepped beside Elena but did not speak for her.
She continued.
“I was assigned here during my review period. Base services, limited duty, no public instruction. I followed orders. You decided my uniform made me harmless.”
Rachel’s mouth tightened.
Elena glanced toward the target.
“I didn’t need to prove I could shoot. I needed to see if you could lead when nobody was clapping.”
The crowd went still.
Rachel looked around and realized the audience had changed sides without moving.
Captain Warren closed the tablet.

“Chief Hayes, you are relieved from the remainder of this demonstration pending review.”
“Sir—”
“Now.”
Rachel’s polished confidence cracked.
Not completely.
But enough.
Enough for every young sailor who had laughed to see that rank did not erase misconduct. Enough for every worker in gray near the back fence to stand a little straighter.
Elena picked up the broom.
That small motion embarrassed Rachel more than any speech could have.
May you like
Because Elena did not need to keep the pistol to own the moment.
She had already taken it.
