Chapter 5 - The File Rachel Never Read

The commanding officer arrived before Rachel could rebuild the moment.

Captain Warren crossed the concrete with two staff officers beside him, his face already hard.

The range went even quieter.

“Chief Hayes,” he said, “why is a base services employee holding a firearm during a public demonstration?”

Rachel straightened.

“Sir, she accepted the challenge voluntarily.”

Elena said nothing.

Captain Warren looked at her.

“Ms. Cruz?”

Elena placed the pistol safely on the bench, action open, then stepped back.

“I was handed the weapon, sir.”

The range officer cleared his throat.

“That is accurate.”

Rachel’s expression flickered.

Captain Warren turned to one of the staff officers.

“Pull the personnel file.”

Rachel gave a short laugh.

“With respect, sir, she sweeps the range.”

Mercer’s voice cut in.

“Not always.”

That was when the staff officer handed the tablet to Warren.

The captain read.

His face changed.

Not shock.

Recognition mixed with anger.

He looked at Elena.

“Elena Cruz. Former Senior Weapons Instructor. Joint Maritime Training Group. Medical retirement pending review.”

The crowd absorbed the words slowly.

Former.

Weapons instructor.

Rachel went still.

Elena’s eyes remained unreadable.

Captain Warren looked at Rachel.

“You publicly handed a firearm to a former instructor without checking her status, then mocked her in front of civilians and service members.”

Rachel tried to recover.

“I had no way of knowing—”

“You had every way,” Warren said. “You simply did not think a woman holding a broom was worth checking.”

That landed harder than the shot.
