Chapter 1 - The Broom at Lane Twelve

“Put the broom down and prove it.”

Chief Rachel Hayes snapped the words loud enough for the entire demonstration range to hear.

The crowd turned at once.

Soldiers.

Sailors.

Contractors.

A few military families standing behind the barriers with phones already raised.

Elena Cruz stood at Lane Twelve in a gray base-services uniform, one gloved hand still holding a broom, dust clinging to her boots. She had been sweeping spent brass near the concrete barrier when Rachel tossed the pistol toward her grip-first, smiling like the whole thing was a joke she owned.

Elena caught it smoothly.

No stumble.

No panic.

No wide-eyed fear.

That should have been the first warning.

But people rarely notice skill when it comes wrapped in a uniform they are trained to ignore.

The bright coastal sun burned over the range. Flags snapped along the fence. The air smelled of gun oil, hot concrete, and ocean wind.

Rachel stood five yards away in her blue Navy flight-style uniform, blonde hair tight beneath her cap, posture sharp and camera-ready. She was the star of the exhibition team, the woman reporters loved, the shooter every young sailor was told to admire.

And she hated being ignored.

Elena had ignored her all morning.

Not rudely.

Worse.

Completely.

While Rachel demonstrated speed drills, Elena swept brass.

While the crowd cheered, Elena emptied bins.

While Rachel hit the center ring and looked around for approval, Elena kept moving like none of it mattered.

Rachel had mistaken that for disrespect.

So now she wanted an audience.

And Elena had become the show.
