Chapter 3 - One Shot

A range safety officer stepped closer.
“Chief, this isn’t part of the event.”
Rachel did not even look at him.
“It is now.”
The officer hesitated.
Everyone knew Rachel Hayes.
Medals.
Sponsors.
Interviews.
Command approval.
A polished symbol of what the public was allowed to admire.
Elena finally lifted her eyes.
“Do you want me to put it down?”
Her voice was quiet, but it carried.
Rachel’s smile hardened.
“No. I want you to prove you are not just taking up space.”
More low laughter moved through the spectators.
Elena looked downrange.
A fresh paper target waited at fifty feet. Small black center. White rings. Bright sunlight catching the edges.

“One shot?” Elena asked.
Rachel laughed.
“One shot, if you can handle it.”
The crowd enjoyed that.
Mercer did not.
He stepped half a pace forward.
Rachel noticed him and mistook his attention for support.
“Load one round,” she ordered.
The range officer looked uncomfortable, but the pistol was safe, the line was controlled, and Elena’s hands were steadier than anyone else’s.
One round was loaded.
Elena raised the pistol.
Not dramatically.
Not like a performer.
Like someone returning to a language she had not spoken in public for a long time.
Her feet settled.
Her shoulders softened.
Her arms extended with clean control.
The laughter thinned before she fired.
One sharp crack cut through the range.
The paper target snapped.
Dead center.
The silence came faster than the echo.
Phones lowered.
Smiles vanished.
Rachel’s face did not move at first.
Then her jaw tightened.
May you like
Elena lowered the pistol safely, finger clear, muzzle downrange.
She looked at Rachel and said, “This is not my weapon.”
