Chapter 9 - THE MOTHER’S DEMAND

Grant took half a step forward, closing the distance between himself and his mother, subtly cutting off any line of sight into the room’s small glass viewing pane.

"Which girl are you referring to, Mother?" Grant asked softly, his voice dropping into a dangerous register.

His mother let out a small, contemptuous sigh, adjusting the collar of her velvet coat.

"Mara," she spat the name like a bitter poison. "My contacts informed me forty minutes ago that she checked into this facility under a fraudulent name. She is a traitor to this family, Grant! She sold our logistics data to the Moretti family and nearly got your brothers killed in the West Side raid!"

Grant felt the small brass key resting against his chest, right over his heart, burning like a hot iron through his silk shirt.

"The evidence against her was very convincing," Grant said quietly, watching his mother's reaction with ruthless precision. "You personally delivered the encrypted flash drives to my desk, didn't you?"

"Because I love this family!" his mother asserted sharply, taking a step closer, her voice echoing down the empty hall. "Because I protect what your father built! She was a snake who seduced her way into our inner circle, and I purged her before she could destroy us completely!"

She pointed a gloved finger at the door of Room 418.

"Stand aside, Grant," she commanded, her tone dropping into an absolute, maternal authority. "My men will take her out of this facility quietly and transfer her to a secure holding house until we determine what she's stolen this time."

The two armed guards behind her stepped forward, their hands moving instinctively toward the lapels of their jackets.
