Chapter 6 - SHADOWS AT THE ELEVATOR

Just as Grant opened his mouth to demand the exact location of the cathedral vault, the distant, chime of the fourth-floor elevator echoed sharply down the long, empty corridor.

DING.

The sound cut through the quiet room like a gun cocking in the dark.

June’s face turned completely pale. She spun around, staring through the narrow crack of the door toward the main hallway.

Mara let out a sharp, terrified gasp, her head snapping toward the entrance as her hands gripped the bedsheets with desperate force. Her heart rate monitor began to beep at a frantic, rapid pace.

A second later, the sharp, rhythmic clicking of high-heeled shoes against the hard linoleum floor resonated through the hall, accompanied by the low, murmuring voices of armed security guards.

Then came a voice—cold, elegant, imperious, and instantly recognizable.

"Where is my son?" Grant’s mother’s voice echoed off the hospital walls from off-screen, filled with absolute authority. "Find him immediately. I want this floor cleared!"

Grant looked down at the small brass key resting in his palm.

He looked at Mara, whose tear-filled eyes were fixed on him in a desperate, silent plea for protection.

June grabbed Grant’s forearm, her fingers digging through his black suit jacket, her voice dropping into a fierce, urgent whisper.

"Open it before she gets here, Grant," June begged. "If she takes that key, you will never know the truth about your sons!"

Grant slowly turned his body toward the cracked door. Down at the far end of the long, cold corridor, moving past the frosted glass windows of the maternity wing, the sharp, unmistakable silhouette of an elegantly dressed older woman pulled into view, her shadows stretching long and dark across the floor toward Room 418.
