Chapter 2 - THE TWIN BASSINETS OF ROOM 418

Grant stood motionless under the cold overhead lights, his dark eyes widening in a rare, shattering moment of vulnerability. For seven long months, he had believed Mara was hiding in Europe, living off the proceeds of a betrayal that had almost destroyed his organization.
June didn't wait for his permission. She turned calmly, placed her hand over the polished brass lever of Room 418, and pushed the door open by a few inches.
The soft, warm light from inside the room spilled out into the cold corridor, cutting across Grant’s dark polished shoes.
Grant took a slow, hesitant step forward, leaning his towering frame against the doorframe to peer inside.
Lying in the center of the elevated hospital bed was Mara Waverly, thirty-two. Her long, dark brown hair was slightly tangled and spread across the white pillows, her pale skin glistening with a light sheen of sweat from hours of painful labor. Wearing a simple, light pink hospital gown, she looked fragile, exhausted, and completely stripped of the defensive armor she used to wear when living in the Waverly mansion.
Beside her bed sat two clear acrylic newborn bassinets, positioned side by side under the soft amber glow of a heating lamp. Inside each bassinet lay a tiny bundle wrapped in a soft white blanket with blue stripes.
Grant’s breath caught in his throat. He stopped breathing altogether, his hands bracing against the wooden doorframe as he stared at the two infants.
"Two?" Grant whispered, his voice cracking slightly, dropping all of his cold, calculated authority.
June stepped up beside him, her tone soft yet heavy with unvarnished truth.

"Your sons," June stated plainly. "Born forty minutes ago. Healthy, strong... and yours."
Grant could not take his eyes off the two sleeping babies. The reality of their presence hit him like a physical blow, shattering the hardened narrative his family had built over the past seven months.
