Chapter 4 - The Offshore Shell

By 11:30 PM, the ballroom was completely empty of guests, leaving behind half-eaten dinners, abandoned wine glasses, and a heavy, suffocating silence.

Julian sat in a velvet armchair near the stage, flanked by two state troopers, while federal agents methodically cataloged his personal phone, laptop, and leather briefcase.

Chloe sat forty feet away on a banquet sofa, her head buried in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. The emerald-green dress, once a symbol of her triumphant elevation into high society, now felt like a weighted lead shroud.

Leo sat at a round table near his mother, his laptop open, typing calmly as he verified data transfers with the financial crimes unit.

“How long?” Julian asked, his voice rough and hollow as he stared at his son. “How long were you digging into my files?”

Leo didn't stop typing. “I wasn't digging, Dad. You gave me administrative access to the home network three years ago when you asked me to fix the security cameras at the lake house.”

“You spied on your own father?”

“I protected my mother,” Leo corrected, finally closing his laptop lid with a soft snap. “When you told nine-year-old Toby that Mom was too sick to remember his birthday last year, I checked her medical records. Her doctor was receiving monthly retainer bonuses from a shell company registered to Chloe's brother.”

Julian’s breath hitched. He looked toward Chloe, whose sob abruptly cut off into a frozen silence.

“The medical reports were falsified,” Leo continued flatly, looking directly into his father's eyes. “You were attempting to medically incapacitate Mom so she couldn't contest the prenuptial agreement during the asset transfer phase.”

Officer Ramirez walked over, sliding a pair of steel handcuffs from her utility belt.

“Julian Vance, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit medical malpractice, and illegal asset concealment,” Ramirez declared, pulling Julian up from the armchair.

As the steel cuffs clicked around Julian’s wrists, he looked at Chloe one last time. “Did you know about the medical retainers?”

Chloe didn't answer. She pulled her silk stole over her shoulders, attempting to hide her face from the flashing cameras of two reporters who had managed to slip past the lobby security guards.

“She knew, Dad,” Leo said softly, standing up beside his mother. “She signed the authorization checks.”
