Chapter 3 - The Digital Trail

The ballroom erupted into chaotic whispers.

Senior board members pulled out their own devices, taking photos of the primary screen as Leo scrolled methodically through the archived timeline.

Timestamp: March 14, 2023. A wire transfer confirmation for $1.2 million from the Vance Charitable Trust to a private account in the Cayman Islands registered under 'Chloe Vance Holdings'.

Timestamp: November 8, 2024. A recorded audio file waveform labeled: 'Julian_Chloe_Strategy_Meeting_04.mp3'.

Leo pressed play on the audio file. His voice, amplified through the ballroom’s high-fidelity surround sound speakers, carried Julian’s unmistakable baritone across the crowd:

“We keep Elena isolated at the lake house. We slow-feed the narrative to the board that her early-onset memory issues are worsening. By the time the audit finishes, I’ll have full power of attorney, and the board won't question the stock reallocation to you.”

Julian lunged forward, abandoning all corporate composure, reaching wildly for the audio mixing console near the stage. “Turn it off! Security, turn the power off immediately!”

Two large security guards in black suits moved quickly toward the AV booth, but before they could reach the cables, four uniformed officers from the State Financial Crimes Unit stepped through the main entrance doors of the ballroom.

The lead investigator, a sharp woman in a dark grey trench coat, stepped past the security guards and held up a federal warrant signed two hours prior.

“Julian Vance,” Officer Ramirez called out over the speaker system. “Stand away from the equipment.”

Julian stopped, his chest heaving, his tie slightly crooked under the harsh glare of the chandelier lights. “Ramirez? This is a private corporate event! You have no jurisdiction to disrupt our annual gala!”

“We aren't here for your gala, Mr. Vance,” Ramirez stated, walking slowly down the carpeted aisle toward the stage. “We are here regarding an emergency freeze order issued on all master accounts associated with Vance Global Logistics, following an evidence dossier submitted six hours ago by your wife’s legal team.”

Julian turned slowly to face Elena, his hands shaking as his corporate empire crumbled around him in real-time. “You destroyed us, Elena. You destroyed the company. You destroyed our boys’ future!”

“No, Julian,” Elena replied quietly, her voice ringing clear and steady. “You sold our boys’ future for emerald silk and secret accounts. Leo simply kept the receipts.”
