Chapter 7 - Naomi’s Counterclaim

The final divorce proceedings shifted after that day.

Adrian had expected to negotiate from dominance. Instead, he negotiated from exposure. Karen amended Naomi’s filings to include fraud, financial concealment, misuse of marital assets, and intentional infliction tied to Adrian’s public paternity claim. The judge ordered a forensic accounting of Vale Holdings and froze disputed asset transfers until the review was complete.

That was when the estate began to bleed truth.

The family home Adrian had described as protected inheritance was carrying debt secured through funds partially drawn from marital accounts. The “business investments” he had referenced were not growth strategies. They were emergency patches. Naomi’s income had stabilized the Vale name while Adrian told their social circle she had failed him as a wife.

Karen found payments to Celeste as well, routed through a consulting contract that did not match any actual work product. Adrian claimed they were legitimate business expenses. Celeste, under subpoena, eventually admitted the consulting role had been mostly a cover after the affair began.

Each admission removed another piece of the story Adrian had built.

Naomi did not attend every accounting meeting. She learned to protect her nervous system from details that no longer required her emotional presence. When Karen needed her, Naomi showed up prepared. When she did not, Naomi went home, cooked dinner for herself, slept without waiting for footsteps in the hall, and slowly remembered what it felt like to occupy a room without being measured against someone else’s disappointment.

Celeste sent one message through her attorney.

She wanted Naomi to know she was sorry.

Naomi did not respond.

Not because forgiveness was impossible forever, but because apology offered at the edge of consequence often arrives looking too much like self-preservation.

Adrian’s mother also tried to contact Naomi.

She wrote that no woman should destroy a family over private pain.

Naomi forwarded the message to Karen.

Then she blocked the number.

For years, Naomi had been treated as the woman who could not produce an heir.

Now she was the woman producing receipts.
