Chapter 2 - The Marriage Built on Blame

For three years, Adrian had let Naomi believe their infertility was her failure.

He never said it directly at first. He was too careful for that. He used softer knives.

“Maybe stress is affecting you.”

“Your body has been through a lot.”

“My mother thinks you should stop working so hard.”

“Maybe you don’t want this badly enough.”

Naomi had gone to every appointment, taken every test, tracked every cycle, swallowed supplements, changed her diet, cried in parking garages, and smiled through family dinners where Adrian’s mother asked when she could expect grandchildren.

Adrian attended the first few consultations. Then he became too busy. Too tired. Too uncomfortable with “clinical details.” He said fertility talk made him feel like a specimen. Naomi, desperate to keep hope alive, carried the humiliation for both of them.

When Dr. Levin recommended complete testing for both spouses, Adrian delayed for months.

Then one night he came home with a bottle of wine, kissed Naomi’s forehead, and said the results were “complicated but not hopeless.” He told her they needed privacy, patience, and less pressure. He said couples survived this only if they stopped looking for someone to blame.

Naomi believed him.

That was the cruelty of it.

She believed him so completely that she blamed herself for the grief in his voice.

Two months later, he began staying late at the office. Celeste appeared as his new marketing consultant, young, polished, ambitious, and always just present enough to seem accidental. Naomi noticed the perfume on Adrian’s collar before she saw the messages. She noticed his phone turning face down at dinner. She noticed Celeste’s name appearing in places it did not need to be.

When the affair became undeniable, Adrian did not apologize.

He said he deserved a future.

He said Celeste was carrying what Naomi could not give him.

He filed for divorce and requested a larger share of marital assets, arguing that Naomi had misrepresented her willingness and ability to provide children. It was a vile argument, but Adrian’s attorney wrapped it in polite language.

Then Celeste announced she was pregnant.

Adrian called the baby his second chance.

Naomi called Dr. Levin.

May you like

Not because she wanted revenge.

Because something in Adrian’s confidence felt rehearsed, and Naomi had finally learned to trust the discomfort she used to silence.
