Chapter 5 - The Estate Was the Real Baby

The hearing resumed with a different atmosphere.

Adrian’s attorney requested additional time to review the medical testimony. Karen objected, arguing that Adrian had introduced the pregnancy as a central claim and could not now seek delay because evidence contradicted him.

The judge allowed limited questioning.

Karen stood.

“Mr. Vale, when did you first become aware of Dr. Levin’s findings?”

Adrian’s attorney objected. The judge overruled.

Adrian adjusted his cuff. “I do not recall the exact date.”

Karen placed a sealed exhibit on the table. “Did you receive these results approximately two years before today’s hearing?”

“I received many documents during treatment.”

“Did you tell Naomi?”

He looked at his attorney.

“Answer the question,” the judge said.

Adrian’s voice flattened. “No.”

Naomi did not react. That restraint cost her more than anyone in the room could see.

Karen continued. “Did you allow your wife to believe the fertility issue was hers?”

“I never said that.”

“You allowed your mother, relatives, and social circle to believe it.”

“That is not the same thing.”

The judge’s expression hardened.

Karen moved to the next exhibit: financial transfers from marital accounts into Vale Holdings, then from Vale Holdings into maintenance, tax, and debt obligations tied to the family estate.

Adrian sat straighter.

There it was.

The real inheritance.

Not the baby. The property.

Karen walked the court through the timeline. Adrian concealed his fertility results. He began an affair. He claimed Celeste’s pregnancy established a future heir. He used that claim to argue for preserving estate assets while simultaneously hiding marital funds used to support those same assets.

The ultrasound had been theater.

The baby had been a shield.

Celeste lowered her head, and for once Naomi did not know whether the woman was ashamed of lying or ashamed of believing she would be protected by the lie.

Then Karen asked the question that snapped the room into silence.

“Mr. Vale, did you know before today that there was a substantial possibility you were not the father of Ms. Warren’s child?”

Adrian’s jaw moved once.

“Yes,” he said.

The gallery erupted in whispers.

Naomi closed her eyes for one second.

May you like

Not in defeat.

In release.
