Chapter 6 - The Father He Could Not Name

No one revealed the child’s father that day.
That was the court’s decision and, surprisingly, Naomi agreed with it. The baby had not asked to become evidence. The child deserved privacy even if every adult involved had treated that privacy like a bargaining chip.
But the sealed DNA paperwork did enough.
It established that Adrian’s claim was unsupported. It established that Celeste’s pregnancy could not be used to redirect marital property or justify Adrian’s public accusations against Naomi. It also opened the door to sanctions over his misleading filings and testimony.
Adrian’s control began to fail in small, visible ways.
He stopped looking at the gallery. He stopped touching Celeste’s shoulder. He stopped performing grief over the loss of a future he had invented. Instead, anger leaked through the cracks—at Celeste for shaking, at Naomi for uncovering the truth, at Dr. Levin for saying aloud what Adrian had counted on shame to keep quiet.
Naomi watched him carefully.
That was new.
During their marriage, she had watched him with fear, love, hope, confusion, and exhaustion. Now she watched him as a person studies weather before deciding where to stand.
He turned toward her once during a break and whispered, “You wanted to humiliate me.”
Naomi looked at him.
“No. You brought humiliation into the room and handed it a photo.”
His eyes sharpened. “You think this helps you?”
“I think the truth helps me.”
“You’ll regret making me look weak.”
That old threat might once have worked.
Now there were attorneys, court reporters, sealed exhibits, and a judge who had already seen enough.
Karen stepped beside Naomi. “Do not speak to my client again.”
Adrian smiled, but it did not land.
Celeste sat alone on the opposite bench, one hand on her belly, staring at the floor. Naomi did not pity her in a soft way. Celeste had participated in the cruelty. She had stood behind Adrian while he called her unborn child “the real heir” to shame another woman.
But Naomi understood something else too.

Adrian had used Celeste the same way he used everyone.
As proof of whatever story kept him powerful.
