Chapter 5 - Mark’s Face

Mark Thompson had built a career on recovering quickly. Katherine had watched him do it in donor meetings, press conferences, board dinners, and private arguments where he always found a way to turn blame into fatigue and responsibility into misunderstanding.
But this time, his face betrayed him before his mouth could save him.
He looked first at Katherine. Then at Tiffany. Then at the phone in Katherine’s hand. His eyes flickered toward the elevator as if he wanted to step backward into it and disappear between floors.
“Katherine,” he said carefully.
Tiffany turned toward him with desperate relief. “Mark, tell her. Tell this woman who I am.”
The lobby held its breath.
Katherine did not look away from her husband. “Yes, Mark. Tell me who she is.”
Mark swallowed.
“She’s an intern.”
Tiffany’s mouth fell open.
Katherine tilted her head. “Just an intern?”
“Katherine, this is not the place.”
“It became the place when she threw coffee on me and claimed to be your wife.”
Tiffany’s voice cracked. “You said—”
Mark snapped toward her. “Be quiet.”
That was when the second truth entered the room.
Tiffany was not shocked that Mark denied her.
She was shocked that he denied her publicly.
David noticed. Henry noticed. The nurses noticed. Katherine certainly noticed.
Katherine lowered the phone but kept the call connected, letting Mark hear himself breathe inside the silence he had created.
“How long,” she asked, “has your intern been telling staff she is Mrs. Thompson?”
Mark’s face tightened. “I can explain.”
“No,” Katherine said. “You can answer.”
Behind him, two board members emerged from the same elevator. One stopped so abruptly the other nearly walked into him.
Katherine saw them.
May you like
Then Mark saw them.
His panic deepened.
