Chapter 3 - The Intern

“Excuse me,” Katherine said, her voice calm enough to cut through the noise. “This is a hospital. Put the phone down and apologize to Henry.”
Tiffany lowered her phone just enough to inspect Katherine. What she saw was a tired woman in a wrinkled white suit with travel-worn makeup, a suitcase handle in one hand, and no visible entourage. That was enough for her to decide Katherine did not matter.
“And who are you?” Tiffany sneered. “Some patient’s aunt? Mind your business.”
Henry recognized Katherine instantly. His eyes widened, and his mouth opened. Katherine gave the smallest shake of her head.
Not yet.
“You are over an hour late for your shift,” Katherine continued. “You are violating dress code, filming in a hospital lobby without permission, and publicly insulting an employee old enough to be your grandfather.”
Tiffany’s eyes sharpened. She lifted her phone higher and aimed it at Katherine’s face. “Look at this, everybody. Some bitter old Karen just attacked me at work. Probably mad because her husband left her.”
A few patients turned. A security guard stepped closer but hesitated, confused by Tiffany’s confidence. In the far corner of the lobby, Dr. Chen knelt beside a collapsed patient, giving orders with calm urgency while nurses moved around him.
“Glucose now,” he said. “Give him room. Stay with me, sir.”
Katherine saw both scenes at once: a doctor saving a life and an intern turning cruelty into content.
“Put the phone down,” Katherine said.
Tiffany smiled.
Then she threw the coffee.
For one frozen second, Katherine could not breathe. Not because of the cold. Because the suit had belonged to a promise. Her father’s hands. His last birthday. His belief that she could lead without ever having to beg a room to recognize her.
Tiffany leaned closer and whispered, “You better apologize and pay me. Do you know who my husband is?”
Katherine’s pulse went quiet.
“No,” she said. “Tell me.”
May you like
Tiffany smiled wider.
“My husband is Mark Thompson. The CEO of this entire hospital.”
