Chapter 1 - The Coffee

The iced coffee hit Katherine Hayes’s white pantsuit before anyone in the hospital lobby understood what the intern had just done. Brown liquid burst across the front of the jacket, soaked through the silk blouse beneath it, and splattered onto the polished marble floor of Apex University Hospital.
The lobby froze.
A nurse gasped near the elevator bank. An elderly valet named Henry lowered his eyes in horror. Dr. David Chen, still catching his breath after stabilizing a collapsed patient across the lobby, turned sharply toward the sound.
Tiffany Jones stood in front of Katherine with the empty coffee cup in one hand and her phone raised in the other. Her hot pink dress looked more suited to a rooftop bar than a hospital shift, and her face wore the theatrical shock of someone already preparing her version for social media.
“You just attacked the CEO’s wife,” Tiffany snapped, pointing the phone at Katherine.
Katherine looked down at the stain spreading across the suit her father had given her on his final birthday. He had buttoned the jacket himself and told her she looked like a woman born to lead.
Then she slowly raised her eyes.
Dr. Chen stepped beside her, blocking part of the crowd’s view. “Miss Jones, stop filming.”
Tiffany laughed. “My husband runs this hospital.”
Katherine reached into her bag, pulled out her phone, tapped one number, and put the call on speaker.
“Then let’s ask him.”
Behind Tiffany, the elevator doors opened.
Mark Thompson stepped out in a navy suit with his tie loosened, saw Katherine covered in coffee, and froze.
Katherine held the phone up.
“Mark,” she said calmly, “explain why your intern thinks she’s your wife.”

Tiffany’s face collapsed.
And the entire lobby went silent.
