Chapter 4 - Dr. Chen Steps In

David Chen had known Katherine long enough to recognize when her silence became dangerous. He had worked at Apex for twelve years, long enough to see donors mistake Mark’s smile for leadership and Katherine’s restraint for invisibility. David never made that mistake. He knew who answered calls at midnight when a pediatric unit needed emergency funds. He knew who protected physicians from political board pressure. He knew who had personally reviewed patient safety reports while Mark was at charity galas.
So when he saw coffee dripping from Katherine’s white suit and Tiffany filming her own lie, David stepped in.
“Miss Jones,” he said, voice controlled, “why are you causing a disturbance in my hospital?”
Tiffany scoffed. “Your hospital? You’re just a doctor. Mark runs this place.”
“A hospital is run by people who save lives,” David said. “Not people who shout into cameras.”
Several nurses looked down to hide their reactions.
Tiffany flushed. “I’ll have Mark fire you.”
Katherine touched David’s arm lightly. “No. Let her call him.”
Tiffany’s smirk flickered.
That was the first crack.
Until that moment, she had believed Mark’s name was a weapon. She had probably used it before. On staff. On residents. On people who knew better but feared the politics of correcting her. Katherine had been overseas, and Mark had apparently used her absence to build a fantasy world where a twenty-something intern could walk through the lobby like a private owner.
Katherine pulled out her phone.
Tiffany’s expression shifted from arrogance to calculation.
“Actually,” Katherine said, “I’ll call him.”
The phone rang four times.
No one moved.
Then the elevator opened.
Mark stepped out and saw both women at once.
His wife in a ruined white suit.
May you like
His intern in a hot pink dress holding an empty coffee cup.
And a lobby full of witnesses.
