Chapter 9 - THE SECOND MEMORY CARD
Three months after the shed incident, investigators found a second memory card.
Margaret had hidden it inside a sewing kit.
The footage went back almost nine months.
Before she moved into the Mercer house.
Before Claire became pregnant.
The videos came from Margaret’s own apartment.
Most showed Margaret talking into the camera as if keeping a diary.
At first they seemed harmless.
“Daniel hasn’t called in four days.”
“Claire keeps him busy.”
“They are talking about children.”
Then:
“If they have a baby, she’ll have him forever.”
Claire paused the video.
Daniel looked sick.
Another entry:
“I need to make sure the baby knows who its real family is.”
Another:
“Claire does not understand that wives come and go.”
Daniel whispered:
“Jesus.”
Then they reached a recording made the day Claire announced her pregnancy.
Margaret sat in front of the camera.
She was smiling.
Crying.
Then she said:
“This changes everything.”
For several minutes she spoke about becoming a grandmother.
Nursery colors.
Baby clothes.
Names.
Then the tone shifted.
“If Claire thinks she can move after the baby is born, she’s wrong.”
Claire had never discussed moving.
“She already controls holidays.”
She didn’t.
“She’ll use breastfeeding to keep me away.”
The baby didn’t exist yet outside a six-week pregnancy.
Then Margaret said something that became the center of the prosecution’s argument about intent:
“I need Daniel to see her clearly before the baby comes.”
Not see what she does.
See her clearly.
Margaret had already decided Claire was the problem.
Everything afterward was an attempt to make reality match that belief.
The cameras.
The articles.
The conversations with Hall.
The staged confrontations.
The shed.
One older clip showed Margaret writing on a legal pad.
Claire gets angry when:
privacy crossed
Daniel sides with me
baby decisions questioned
belongings moved
Claire stared.
“She was learning my triggers.”
Daniel whispered:
“She was provoking you.”
Exactly.
Margaret was not documenting unpredictable behavior.
She was pressing known wounds and recording the reaction.
Then came the worst clip.
Three weeks before the shed.
Margaret looked directly into the camera and said:
“If Daniel sees how quickly she turns ugly under pressure, he’ll understand what I’ve been telling him.”
Claire shut the laptop.
