THE CAMERA IN THE SHED / Chapter 7 / 12

Chapter 7 - THE MAN ON THE RECORDING

The male voice belonged to an attorney.

Not a criminal mastermind.

Not a corrupt judge.

A legitimate family-law attorney named Gregory Hall.

That almost made things worse.

Hall voluntarily spoke to investigators.

He had never been told about hidden cameras.

Never advised confinement.

Never suggested fabricating evidence.

Margaret had contacted him months earlier asking hypothetical questions.

“What happens if a pregnant mother becomes unstable?”

“What rights does a grandmother have if a parent isolates a child?”

“What if a son is emotionally controlled by his spouse?”

Hall repeatedly told her grandparents had limited independent rights while both parents remained fit.

Margaret hated the answer.

She asked what evidence would matter if a child were unsafe.

Hall said:

“Document real incidents. Do not create them.”

Margaret apparently heard only the first part.

Investigators played a longer shed recording.

Hall’s voice came through a phone placed on speaker.

“If you believe your daughter-in-law is dangerous, call emergency services when an actual incident occurs.”

Margaret:

“She is clever enough to behave around other people.”

“Then you may not have a case.”

“She screams at Daniel.”

“Married couples argue.”

“She cries constantly.”

“She’s pregnant.”

“She broke a mug.”

Hall sighed.

“Mrs. Mercer, none of what you’re describing establishes parental unfitness.”

Margaret stayed silent.

Then said:

“What if there was something stronger?”

Hall’s answer was clear.

“You do not manufacture stronger.”

The call ended.

Three days later Margaret installed the shed camera.

Claire sat listening with both hands over her stomach.

Daniel looked destroyed.

“She was trying to make you look dangerous.”

Claire shook her head.

“Not dangerous.”

“What?”

“Unstable.”

The difference mattered.

Dangerous implies action.

Unstable can be manufactured from emotion.

Margaret had been waiting for Claire to panic.

To scream.

To threaten.

To strike something.

Perhaps to say something terrible while trapped.

The camera was aimed directly at the chair.

Margaret expected Claire to sit there for hours.

Maybe overnight.

Maybe eventually beg.

Maybe rage.

Then Margaret could present selective footage.

Not enough legally to take the baby.

But enough to poison Daniel.

Enough to tell relatives:

See?

Enough to start a file.

This was not one violent night.

It was the next step in a campaign.

The detective asked:

“Did your mother ever suggest Claire was mentally ill?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After the first trimester.”

“What did she say?”

“That Claire was paranoid.”

Claire laughed once.

The sound contained no humor.

“Because I found her camera.”

Daniel covered his face.

The detective said nothing.

He didn’t need to.

Margaret had created evidence of Claire’s paranoia by secretly surveilling her.

Then used Claire’s discovery of surveillance as proof she was paranoid.

May you like

It was almost elegant.

If it hadn’t been so cruel.
