THE CAMERA IN THE SHED / Chapter 11 / 12

Chapter 11 - THE BABY

Claire gave birth to a girl in February.

Seven pounds, three ounces.

Dark hair.

Daniel cried before the baby even fully entered the world.

They named her Sophie Claire Mercer.

No Joseph.

No Margaret.

No family negotiation.

Just Sophie.

Their marriage survived, but not because the baby repaired anything.

Babies do not repair marriages.

Work does.

Daniel sold the house.

That was his idea.

Claire initially resisted.

“It’s our house.”

“I know.”

“Your mother doesn’t get to chase us out.”

“She isn’t.”

Daniel looked toward the backyard.

“I don’t want Sophie someday asking what that shed was.”

Claire understood.

They moved twenty minutes away.

Smaller house.

Larger yard.

No guest suite.

Daniel joked that was deliberate.

It was.

The old shed was demolished before the sale.

Claire attended.

Not because she needed a symbolic moment.

Because she wanted to see it gone.

A contractor removed the doors first.

Then the roof.

Then the walls.

The small chair Margaret had positioned for the camera had already been taken as evidence.

When the last wall came down, Claire expected to feel something dramatic.

She mostly felt relief.

That was enough.

Daniel’s contact with Margaret remained suspended beyond the criminal order.

Even after the legal restriction ended, he did not immediately resume the relationship.

Some relatives accused Claire.

Of course.

His aunt called and said:

“Your mother is getting older.”

Daniel answered:

“So is my wife.”

His cousin said:

“She made one terrible mistake.”

Daniel said:

“She made hundreds of decisions that created one terrible night.”

That distinction mattered.

By Sophie’s first birthday, Claire trusted him again in ways she had not thought possible.

Not blindly.

Better than blindly.

Trust with evidence.

When Claire said something bothered her, Daniel no longer asked whether she could tolerate it.

He asked:

“What do you need?”

May you like

It sounded small.

It changed everything.
