THE CAMERA IN THE SHED / Chapter 10 / 12

Chapter 10 - MARGARET EXPLAINS HERSELF

Margaret eventually accepted a plea agreement.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Her attorney knew it.

So did she.

At sentencing, she spoke.

Claire almost didn’t attend.

Then decided she wanted to hear whether Margaret could say what she had done without turning herself into the injured party.

She couldn’t.

Not entirely.

Margaret stood in court in a navy suit.

No burgundy robe.

No furious gestures.

She looked smaller.

“I love my son.”

Claire closed her eyes briefly.

Of course that was where she started.

“I raised him alone.”

Daniel sat beside Claire.

His face went still.

“I sacrificed everything.”

The judge interrupted.

“Mrs. Mercer, speak about the conduct before the court.”

Margaret swallowed.

“I became afraid my daughter-in-law was taking him away.”

Claire looked at her.

Margaret continued.

“I convinced myself Claire was unstable.”

“Did you believe that before or after secretly recording her?” the judge asked.

Margaret hesitated.

“Before.”

“Did you attempt to provoke reactions?”

Margaret’s mouth tightened.

“Yes.”

“Why lock her in the shed?”

“I wanted her to calm down.”

The prosecutor said:

“You locked her outside during a thunderstorm.”

Margaret shook her head.

“She had shelter.”

Claire almost laughed.

The judge looked tired.

“Mrs. Mercer, she was pregnant.”

“I knew.”

“You took her phone.”

“Yes.”

“You locked the exterior door.”

“Yes.”

“You had a camera positioned inside.”

Margaret cried.

“Yes.”

The judge waited.

“What did you expect the camera to capture?”

Long silence.

Finally:

“Her reaction.”

“What reaction?”

“Anger.”

“And why did you want footage of her anger?”

Margaret’s voice broke.

“To show Daniel.”

There it was.

Not concern for a baby.

Not safety.

Proof.

A mother staging conditions to make her daughter-in-law fail.

The judge sentenced Margaret to incarceration followed by extended probation and strict no-contact provisions, with additional restrictions on possessing surveillance equipment during supervision.

The exact number of months mattered less to Claire than one final exchange.

Before being led away, Margaret looked at Daniel.

“Please.”

He stood.

For a second Claire thought he would go to her.

Old reflex.

Old Daniel.

Margaret reached toward him.

“I’m your mother.”

Daniel’s face collapsed.

Then he said:

“I know.”

Nothing else.

May you like

He sat back down.

Margaret finally understood that motherhood was not a permanent exemption from consequences.
