Chapter 6 - The Part Elena Heard

After Mia and Brent left, the house did not feel peaceful.

It felt injured.

There were bags in the hallway, empty delivery containers in the upstairs studio, receipts stuffed into drawers, and the strange stale smell of a home that had been used but not cared for.

Elena sat on the sofa with the blanket across her lap, watching afternoon light move over the floor.

“I should have told you,” she said.

I sat beside her.

“Yes.”

She nodded, accepting the word without flinching.

“I kept thinking she would stop if I stayed calm.”

I looked toward the stairs.

“She studied calm. She used it.”

Elena’s eyes filled.

“She’s my daughter.”

“I know.”

“What if I made her this way?”

“We both helped. That doesn’t mean she gets to hurt you.”

She covered her face with one hand.

For years, Elena’s love had been the soft place Mia returned to after each failure. But soft places need walls too. Without them, they become places where people dump what they refuse to carry.

Later that evening, Patricia prepared a simple meal and made Elena eat slowly. I sat across from her and ate too, because she looked ashamed doing it alone.

Halfway through dinner, Elena whispered, “I heard her upstairs sometimes.”

I went still.

“She would say things about me,” she continued. “To Brent. To the phone. I told myself she was venting.”

“What did she say?”

Elena swallowed.

“That I was useless. That I looked pathetic. That once I went into assisted living, she could use the downstairs bedroom for storage.”

The fork in my hand stopped moving.

Elena gave a small, broken laugh.

“I’m not even sixty.”

I reached across the table and took her hand.

“You are staying in this house. She is not.”

For the first time since I came home, Elena cried loudly.

May you like

Not from fear.

From being believed.
