Chapter 4 - The Morning Professionals Arrived

At 9:03 a.m., Mia came downstairs carrying a coffee she had ordered to the house with the household card I had already frozen.

Her mood changed when the delivery failed.

“Dad,” she snapped from the hallway, “something’s wrong with the card.”

“Yes,” I said. “I froze it.”

She appeared in the kitchen doorway.

Brent followed behind her, still wearing my watch.

Elena sat at the kitchen table in clean clothes, wrapped in the gray blanket. She looked exhausted, but there was color in her face now. A home-care nurse named Patricia sat beside her, reviewing notes. My accountant, Martin Reeves, stood near the island with a folder. My attorney, Grace Caldwell, waited by the front entry, calm and serious.

Mia stopped walking.

“What is this?”

“Accountability,” I said.

She laughed once. “For what?”

Grace stepped forward.

“For misuse of household funds, unauthorized access to private property, elder-adjacent neglect concerns involving Mrs. Mercer’s care needs, and potential financial exploitation depending on what the account review confirms.”

Mia’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Brent slowly lowered his coffee.

I looked at his wrist.

“Take off my watch.”

He glanced at Mia.

I repeated myself, quieter.

“Now.”

He removed it and placed it on the counter.

Mia recovered enough to scoff. “You’re seriously doing this because Mom skipped a few meals?”

Elena flinched.

That was the last time I allowed Mia to reduce it.

“No,” I said. “I’m doing this because the refrigerator was empty, your mother was too weak to lift water, and you were upstairs telling strangers I was too soft to stop you.”

Mia’s face changed.

She knew.

The recording.

Martin opened his folder and placed several blurred statements on the island.

“In the past fourteen days, over seventeen thousand dollars left the household account,” he said. “Luxury retail, resale purchases, personal delivery meals, salon charges, private car services, and cash withdrawals.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Mia said, “That money was for the house.”

“Yes,” I said. “And you spent it while your mother went hungry inside it.”
