Chapter 5 - Mia’s Last Performance

Mia tried every role before lunch.

First, outrage.

“You’re humiliating me in my own home.”

“This is not your home,” I said.

Then innocence.

“I thought Mom was dieting.”

Patricia, the nurse, looked up from her notes.

“Mrs. Mercer presents signs of inadequate nutrition and dehydration. That is not dieting.”

Then victimhood.

“You always choose her over me.”

I stared at my daughter, and for the first time in years, I did not rush to close the wound she had opened herself.

“I am choosing the person you harmed.”

That shut her up longer than anything else had.

Brent tried to leave quietly with one of his bags.

Grace stopped him with a look.

“Anything belonging to Mr. or Mrs. Mercer stays in the house until reviewed.”

He put the bag down.

Mia’s eyes darted toward the stairs, probably calculating what she could hide, delete, or post. But Martin had already secured the account records, Grace had already preserved the recording, and Patricia had already documented Elena’s condition.

Mia’s audience was gone.

That was what broke her performance.

She looked at me, suddenly not arrogant but furious in a younger, uglier way.

“You made me like this,” she said.

The room went quiet.

I nodded once.

“That may be partly true.”

Elena looked at me sharply.

I kept my eyes on Mia.

“I gave you too much. I excused too much. I confused rescue with love. I made it easy for you to believe consequences were something other people had to face.”

Mia’s expression flickered.

For one second, she thought apology meant surrender.

Then I continued.

“That ends today.”

Her face hardened.

“You can’t just cut me off.”

“I already have.”

I handed Grace a set of documents.

“Your access to household accounts is revoked. Your personal charges are being separated. Anything purchased with misused funds will be returned, sold, or deducted from what you owe. You and Brent have thirty minutes to pack essentials. The rest will be inventoried.”

Mia stared at me.

May you like

Then at Elena.

For once, my wife did not look away.
