Chapter 3 - Behind the Door

I did not confront Mia that night.
Not fully.
That would have been what she expected. A fight. Tears. Accusations. A performance she could clip, twist, and turn into proof that I was controlling and Elena was fragile.
Instead, I helped Elena stand.
Mia crossed her arms. “Seriously? You’re acting like she’s dying?”
I ignored her.
I made Elena toast with peanut butter from the emergency kit in my car, then soup from a sealed travel pack I kept in my luggage. She ate slowly, ashamed of needing help. That shame made me angrier than anything Mia said.
“You should have called me,” I whispered.
Elena’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t want to bother you.”
“You are my wife. You are not a bother.”
Across the kitchen, Mia made a small disgusted sound.
Brent looked at his phone.
I got Elena settled in the downstairs guest room because the stairs were too much for her. Then I went to my office, closed the door halfway, and called my attorney, my accountant, and the home-care nurse who used to help Elena after her surgery two years earlier.
By morning, two professionals would be at my door.
But Mia did not know that.
So I waited.
At 11:38 p.m., I stood behind the half-open door near the stair landing while Mia livestreamed from the guest room she had turned into her studio. She sat under soft lights, wrist glittering with a diamond bracelet I had never seen, designer bag placed carefully behind her shoulder.
Brent lounged on the bed wearing my watch.
Mia laughed at something on the screen.
“Dad won’t do anything,” she whispered to him, thinking the stream had ended. “He’s too soft. He’ll blame himself for being gone.”
Brent said, “What about your mom?”
Mia shrugged.
“She’ll cry. Then she’ll forgive me. She always does.”
My phone was already recording.
Mia leaned closer to Brent.
“The trick is making Dad feel guilty before he gets angry.”
That was the sentence that ended my old life as her father.
Not because I stopped loving her.
Because I finally understood love without consequences had become permission.

I saved the recording.
Then I went downstairs, sat beside Elena while she slept, and waited for morning.
