Chapter 9 - The Confrontation across the Marble

Adrian took one slow, deliberate step toward Nora’s mother. The heavy leather of his shoe struck the marble floor with a sound like a gavel dropping in a courtroom.
The security guards moved to follow him, but Adrian raised his left hand in a sharp, absolute gesture without looking back.
"Stand down," Adrian commanded. His voice was no longer cold or smooth; it was cracked, rough with an intense emotional strain that his men had never heard before. "Every single one of you... clear the hall. Now."
Mrs. Holloway did not hesitate. She motioned frantically to the security detail. Within five seconds, the guards and staff retreated through the heavy double doors at the far end of the corridor, pulling the doors shut behind them, leaving only Adrian, Nora, and Nora’s mother alone in the vast, sunlit space.
Adrian walked slowly toward the mother, stopping five feet away from her. The height difference between them was massive, yet right now, the powerful mob boss looked as though he was standing before an absolute judge.
"How long?" Adrian asked softly, his voice trembling with a mixture of raw pain and rising awe. "How long have you had this?"

Nora’s mother swallowed hard, tears finally spilling over her lashes and running down her pale cheeks. She didn't drop her gaze. She stood her ground, defending her daughter's existence with the quiet strength of a mother who had survived four years in enemy territory.
"Since the night he died, Adrian," she whispered, her voice trembling but clear. "James gave it to me two hours before his car was run off the bridge. He told me if anything ever happened to him, I had to hide Nora. He said... he said your uncle's faction in the family would kill his child to take his share of the empire."
