Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past Unveiled

Adrian slowly rose from his kneeling position, his tall frame unfolding until he stood at his full height over the three-year-old girl. He did not take his eyes off Nora’s mother. The shock on his face was turning into something far deeper, far more complex—a terrifying mixture of profound grief, sudden realization, and overwhelming disbelief.

He looked down at Nora once more. The little girl was looking up at him, her hazel eyes bright and innocent, totally unaware of the atomic bomb she had just dropped into the center of the Cole family hierarchy.

Adrian looked back into the purse one more time, ensuring his mind wasn't playing cruel tricks on him.

Resting inside that cheap pink plastic toy was an object that could only belong to one person in the world: James Cole’s custom-engraved gold signet ring—the priceless family heirloom that James wore every single day of his life, an item that had mysteriously vanished from his body on the night he was killed four years ago. And wrapped around the ring was a small, worn photograph showing James Cole holding a newborn baby girl in a secret hospital room, kissing the infant's forehead with pure, unadulterated devotion.

Adrian’s breath came in a ragged, silent gasp. The math executed itself in his brilliant, analytical mind in a fraction of a second: four years... the uniform... the unique posture... the laughter... the child's age... the hazel eyes.

Nora was not just the daughter of an estate staff worker.

Nora was James Cole’s daughter. She was Adrian’s niece—the rightful, living heir to the Cole family bloodline.
