Chapter 9 - THE POLICE REPORT

Mom filed the report that afternoon.
Her choice.
Not mine.
A patrol officer came to the house.
Then an adult-protective-services referral was made because of the financial transfers and coercion concerns.
Nothing cinematic happened.
Vanessa was not dragged away screaming.
She denied deliberately stealing anything.
Claimed Mom authorized expenses.
Claimed the slap was a single emotional incident.
Some transactions could be disputed.
Others were harder to explain.
The process became paperwork.
Interviews.
Bank statements.
Witness accounts.
That frustrated me at first.
I wanted one clean moment in which everyone officially declared:
Helen was wronged.
Vanessa did it.
Brandon allowed it.
Fix everything.
Life doesn’t work that way.
Evidence has to be sorted.
Intent examined.
Money traced.
But there was one immediate consequence.
Vanessa moved out.
Her sister lived forty minutes away.
So the claim that she had nowhere to go lasted approximately twelve hours.
Brandon packed a suitcase too.
Mom stopped him at the door.
“You can stay.”
I looked at her.
So did he.
Helen continued.
“But not because I need someone.”
Brandon’s eyes filled.
“You understand?”
He nodded.
“You stay because you’re my son and because I’m choosing to give you another chance.”
“Yes.”
“And Vanessa does not come into this house unless I say so.”
“Yes.”
“And you give Rachel every bank statement you have.”
His jaw tightened.
Then:
“Yes.”
Mom took a breath.
“And if you lie to me again, you leave.”
My mother’s hands were trembling.
May you like
Her voice wasn’t.
That mattered more than anything I had done.
