Chapter 12 - BRANDON

My brother did not become heroic because he finally said no.
I refused to let him rewrite himself that way.
Neither did he.
He started counseling.
Paid Mom back every dollar he personally benefited from.
Took extra weekend shifts.
Moved into a small apartment six months later, even though Mom told him he could stay.
“Why leave?” I asked.
He looked around the kitchen.
“Because I need to know I can stand somewhere without hiding behind her house.”
I understood.
Before leaving, he fixed the loose railing Dad had meant to repair.
Repainted Mom’s bedroom.
Replaced the broken plates with a similar floral set he found online.
Mom opened the box.
Then closed it.
“What?”
Brandon looked worried.
“You don’t like them?”
“They’re beautiful.”
“Then?”
She touched the cardboard.
“I don’t need the old plates replaced.”
He stared.
“They were Grandma’s.”
“I know.”
She smiled.
“Some things can break and stay broken.”
Then she hugged him.
That sentence became important to all of us.
