Chapter 10 - THE THINGS I MISSED

I stayed three months.
Originally, I had planned three weeks.
My hospital overseas approved extended leave after I explained there was a family emergency.
During those months, I discovered hundreds of small things I had missed from across the ocean.
Mom had stopped driving because Vanessa told her she was unsafe.
There had been no accident.
No doctor’s warning.
Vanessa simply disliked Mom using “their” car, even though Mom had helped with the down payment.
Mom had stopped attending Tuesday church lunches because Vanessa said somebody needed to be home for deliveries.
She had stopped buying fresh flowers.
Stopped inviting her friend Louise over.
Stopped wearing lipstick because Vanessa joked that women her age looked ridiculous trying to appear young.
None of those things sounded dramatic separately.
That is how control works.
It rarely arrives carrying a sign that says abuse.
It arrives as jokes.
Efficiency.
Advice.
Someone “helping.”
Then one day you realize a woman who once drove four hours alone to watch my nursing graduation was asking permission to buy shampoo.
I blamed Vanessa.
Then Brandon.
Then myself.
Mom caught me doing that one morning.
I was replacing a kitchen cabinet hinge.
“You’re angry.”
“Yes.”
“At yourself.”
I stopped.
She knew me too well.
“I should have come home sooner.”
“Maybe.”
I looked at her.
That wasn’t what I expected.
Mom smiled sadly.
“You wanted me to say you couldn’t have known.”
“I couldn’t.”
“You could have known something.”
That hurt because it was true.
“I kept telling you I was fine because I didn’t want you to quit your work and come rescue me.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m your mother.”
She dried a plate.
“And because admitting what was happening meant admitting Brandon was allowing it.”
I sat down.
“So we both helped the silence.”
She nodded.
“Different reasons.”
That was important.
No easy absolution.
No melodramatic guilt.
Just truth.
I promised her something.
“From now on, if you tell me you’re fine in that voice, I’m asking twice.”
She laughed.
May you like
“Three times.”
“Deal.”
