Chapter 7 - VANESSA’S VERSION

Vanessa came downstairs at seven.

Dressed.

Hair done.

Car keys in hand.

She walked into the kitchen as though nothing had happened.

“I’ve spoken to an attorney.”

I poured Mom coffee.

“Good.”

“He says you cannot evict me without notice.”

“Probably true.”

Her confidence returned slightly.

“Exactly.”

“But you’re misunderstanding something.”

“What?”

“I’m not the one asking you to leave today.”

Mom looked at me.

So did Vanessa.

I put my hand over Mom’s.

“Helen is.”

My mother swallowed.

This part mattered.

I could own paperwork.

I could call police.

I could arrange attorneys.

But if I replaced Vanessa’s control with mine, I had misunderstood the entire problem.

Mom looked at Vanessa.

Her voice shook.

“I want you gone.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Helen.”

“I want you out.”

“After everything I’ve done for you?”

Mom flinched.

Then looked at me.

I said nothing.

She continued.

“You took my money.”

“I paid household expenses.”

“You grabbed me.”

“You were hysterical.”

“You slapped me.”

“You dropped my grandmother’s plates!”

The words hung there.

Finally.

Vanessa believed a broken plate justified striking a person.

Mom seemed to hear it clearly too.

Her shoulders straightened.

“You hit me over a plate.”

Vanessa’s face shifted.

“That isn’t—”

“A plate.”

Helen looked down at the broken pieces I had placed in a cardboard box overnight.

“My mother gave me those dishes when I got married.”

For one second, I thought that memory might make Mom retreat again.

Instead she said:

“They still weren’t worth hitting me.”

Vanessa fell silent.

Mom looked toward the side table.

“And I am not signing those papers.”

Brandon entered behind us.

Vanessa turned.

“Say something.”

He looked at his wife.

Then at Mom.

His face crumpled.

“Mom’s right.”

Vanessa stared as though he had slapped her.

“What?”

“You need to leave.”

That was the first boundary my brother had set in almost two years.

Vanessa’s reaction told us exactly why he had been afraid to set one.

She exploded.
